Welcome to Howard Community College’s First-Year Experience (FYE) homepage. The First-Year Experience philosophy, growing out of John Gardner’s work at the University of South Carolina, recognizes the uniqueness of students’ first year in college. Because this first year is so critical, institutions must do whatever possible to guide, support, and effectively teach first-year students as they begin, in earnest, to become adult learners and make a successful transition to collegiate life. In accordance with HCC’s mission and our motto, members of the institution collaborate to create an environment that inspires learning and the lifelong pursuit of personal goals, to help students “…get there from here.” HCC’s FYE Program is built on a strong partnership between Student Services and Academic Affairs. A hallmark of HCC’s program, which originated as an initiative in the English/World Languages Division, is strong cross-curricular faculty involvement. Links from this page provide a wealth of teaching ideas from the English/World Languages professors in addition to best practices of faculty members from all disciplines at the college. To enhance understanding of FYE philosophy and practices, HCC full-time faculty are invited to participate in a year-long Faculty Learning Community, and regularly scheduled faculty development workshops are provided for full-time and adjunct faculty members. Guiding the direction and growth of the program is the FYE Advisory Board, a cross-functional team composed of faculty and student services members with student input. Please use the links to the right to learn more about HCC’s FYE Program and to find out specifically how HCC is working to increase opportunities for beginning college students’ adjustment, retention, and success.
