What to do before the semester begins:

  1. Before you begin teaching, make sure that you are able to access your college email account (should be your first initial and last name@howardcc.edu). You should put your email address and college voicemail number on your syllabus so that your students can contact you.

  2. Meet with your course coordinator(s) for each of the classes you are teaching. For example if you are teaching both ENGL-097 and ENGL-121, you will need to talk with Andrea Shanklin and Lisa Wilde. The course coordinators will give you a textbook and other materials that you will need. They can also confirm your schedule and classroom location with you. It is important to review the English / WL Division’s web site for specific courses that you are teaching. There you will find sample calendars, syllabi, and other helpful resources.

  3. Attend all faculty evening on the Tuesday before the semester begins to obtain a classroom access card and a mailbox key. Please see the Division staff if you miss All Faculty Evening so that you can obtain these important items. Your parking pass, a letter of intent, and e-mail access instructions will be mailed to you before the semester begins

  4. If you would like some paid hours tutoring in a writing or tutoring center, please contact the Composition and Literature Center’s coordinator, William Lowe (wlowe@howardcc.edu) or the Learning Assistance Center’s Coordinator, Margaret Garroway (mgarroway@howardcc.edu).

  5. Before the first day, check your mailbox for your contract, which you must sign and return immediately. You will also find your class roster in your mailbox just before the first day of classes.

  6. If you need any office supplies before the semester begins (folders, markers, transparency sheets, etc.), ask an office associate in ELB 239 to help you find or order what you need.
