How can I advance to the next pay level?
Refer the student to the Academic Advising office, L130, x4856, or to your course coordinator.
I can’t teach my class one day. What should I do?
Do not cancel class. Call the division office first and make sure you reach
a person. Contact other adjunct instructors who are teaching the same course,
and ask if they will trade days with you. You must notify your course coordinator,
but no paperwork is necessary for the trade. If a trade is not possible,
another HCC instructor can substitute for you, but fill out a form with an
office associate in the English/WL division office to transfer your pay to
the substitute. In an emergency, call the division chair at 410-772-4566.

Am I required to hold office hours?
You are required to make yourself available to students outside of class for extra help. This can be by appointment if necessary. If you would like to get paid for holding your office hours in the Composition and Literature Center or CLC (ILB 210), please contact one of the CLC coordinators: William Lowe (wlowe@howardcc.edu) or Ezekiel Vifansi (evifansi@howardcc.edu).
What happens if the college is closed?
HCC does NOT follow Howard County Public Schools (students need to be reminded of this). HCC closing will be announced on www.howardcc.edu, on the main college switchboard (410) 772-4800, the division chair’s phone greeting 410-772-4566, and on TV and radio. (Tell students to check the website or the main college switchboard if they would like to know - decisions on closing are usually made early and the TV/radio does not always have the latest information.) The lost time will need to be made up. Discuss options with your class or ask your course coordinator for ideas. In rare cases when a lot of time has been missed, the division or the college will schedule required make-up time.
Where can I find supplies, such as pens, binders and paper goods?
There is a supply cabinet in the division office, ILB 239. If you can't find what you need, ask one of the staff members to help you.
What should I do when a student is in emotional distress about a non-academic problem?
Privacy is important. Refer the student to Counseling and Career Services, L140, x4840. They may receive short-term individual or group counseling, or referral to campus and community resources. Offer to pick up the phone to make an appointment for the student in his/her presence. You may also accompany the student to Counseling and Career Services.
What should I do when the fire alarm rings?
Do not ignore alarms. Tell students to take all belongings with them. Leave the classroom. Make sure you have locked and closed the classroom door. Escort handicapped students to the marked (“handicap assembly area”) stairwell. Leave the building with your students, and go to the designated assembly area. The HCC staff with orange hats and /or armbands will guide you. Be sure to alert a building coordinator (orange armband) to the location of the students with disabilities. Return to class only when directed by security. Safety information can be found at www.howardcc.edu/hcc/security/studsfty8.htm.
If there is a hurricane or tornado warning, students should gather in the basement of the ILB. The environmental shelter, in case of biological, chemical, or radiological threats, is in ILB 100.
If you teach the first class of the day in any given computerized classroom, when you come into the classroom, all of the computers should be 'OFF'. If they were properly shut down, you should be able to turn them on by turning on the instructor’s CPU, clicking on the Net Support Tutor icon. After that, click on the “Client” pull-down menu, and select “Power Management.” Then choose “Power On.”
If you teach the last class of the day in any given classroom, you MUST make
sure that the computers are all turned off before you leave for the day.
To properly shut down the computers, you can use Net Support Tutor to
“Power Off” all of the computers through the “Client” menu at the top of the
screen (via “Power Management”).
Note: It is often a good idea to re-boot or power off all of your students’ computers after a class, even if it’s not the last class of the day, especially if you notice that they have installed or selected distracting screen savers--or changed or added anything that might be a problem for the next class.
How do I schedule make-up tests?
You can send a copy of the test to the test center, using the designated test center mailbox and the form in the Division Office. On the form, you can specify the date by which the test must be taken, the maximum length of time allowed, and the additional items which may or may not be used. Alternatively, you may fax your test request form with the test or assignment to the test center. Their fax number is 410-772-4257 Click here for additional information about the test center.
This student may request that all tests be taken in the Test Center, L154, x4853 (Click here)
One week before the test date, send the test (perhaps a different version) through campus mail with a test center form, found in the English/WL division office. The test will return to you the day after it is taken.
A computer on campus has a problem. How do I report it?
There is an online log book at acsweb.howardcc.edu/acsms . You will register for an account, and then you can use it every time you need to report a computer problem in your classroom or elsewhere on campus.
How can I advance to the next pay level?
The Adjunct Advancement Plan and other adjunct information can be found at the Teaching and Learning web site www.howardcc.edu/tli/default.htm. You are expected to meet with the division chair to discuss the details of your professional development activities.
If the main bulb goes out in the projector, make sure that you notify either the division office, your room coordinator, or call AV directly to get that bulb replaced. The projector will use the back-up bulb, but if that goes out in the middle of a class then the instructor will have no backup. If you have any other problems with the room, leave a note, call, or e-mail your room coordinator to let them know so that we can keep things in tip-top shape for all our instructors and students.
If neither your room coordinator nor the division office can help you out and you must find a working piece of equipment from another room, make sure that you return everything to its original state at the end of your class and that you notify the room coordinator of the problem so that it can be fixed.
