Resources for Students

  1. Instructor office hours:  Instructors are asked to set aside some time to meet with students if they have questions or concerns.  Often lab time can be used for individual conferences.  Also, be sure to give students your email address and HCC voicemail number so that they can contact you.

  1. English lab:  Students who need additional lab time can go to the Composition and Literature Center in ILB 210.  All of the software for the course is available on the computers in that room.  English teachers are available to help students revise and improve papers.  Please encourage your students to use the resources in this room before they hand in formal written assignments.  Some instructors require that a written assignment be reviewed in the English lab before it is turned in.  Please tell students that this is not a proofreading service, nor will instructors make any corrections on student papers.

  1. Write Room:   Located in the Learning Assistance Center in the library, the Write Room is another place for students to get help with their writing.  It works much the same way as the English lab.  Tutors review papers and make suggestions for ways to improve the assignment.  Please tell students that this is not a proofreading service, nor will instructors make any corrections on student papers.

  1. Online Writing Lab (HOWL):  Students can submit a paper online and receive feedback from an English tutor.  The URL is http://howardcc.edu/

  1. Open Computer Lab:  ILB 210 and 110 are open and available throughout the week for students who need to use computers. A student ID is needed to use the computers in the lab.

  1. Tutoring:  Free tutoring is available in the Learning Assistance Center in the library.  Students need to apply in the LAC.  Encourage them to apply early as the tutoring resources get filled up quickly.

  1. Career Center:   Career counselors are available for students to help them with their career decision-making process in room L154.  In addition, the Career Center has lots of literature, college catalogues and software to assist students.  The director is Janice Marks.  410-772-4840

  1. Mental Health Counselor:  Alissa Putman and Terry Bates are mental health counselors who are available to see students with personal problems.  In a crisis situation, a counselor can intervene immediately.  Otherwise, students can schedule appointments.  410-772-4840; room L 154.

  1. English / World Languages Webpage:  A place where students and instructors can access course materials and many kinds of important and useful information about the various courses and programs. Go to http://www.howardcc.edu/english/default.htm.
