
This is the resource page for students and teachers of ENGL-106, Successful Learning Strategies.
Successful Learning Strategies is a two-credit course designed to enhance the learning potential and success of college students. Students will learn both study and life skills including learning styles, goal-setting, time management, memory, note-taking, test taking skills, diversity issues, critical and creative thinking, relationships, health, and Howard Community College’s resources.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- identify his/her individual learning style and analyze its impact on academic success.
- prepare a weekly time schedule.
- recall previously learned information using memory improvement techniques.
- implement an effective reading technique to improve comprehension of textbook material.
- take accurate and complete class notes.
- select and apply appropriate test-taking strategies.
- use creative and critical thinking techniques in problem solving and decision making.
- demonstrate effective listening skills.
- implement an effective strategy for communicating across cultures.
- use college resources effectively.
- evaluate his/her health and identify any behavior(s) that may need adjustment.
- analyze his/her values and set short-term and long-term goals related to them.
