This is the resource page for students and teachers of ENGL-106, Successful Learning Strategies.

Successful Learning Strategies is a two-credit course designed to enhance the learning potential and success of college students. Students will learn both study and life skills including learning styles, goal-setting, time management, memory, note-taking, test taking skills, diversity issues, critical and creative thinking, relationships, health, and Howard Community College’s resources.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. identify his/her individual learning style and analyze its impact on academic success.
  2. prepare a weekly time schedule.
  3. recall previously learned information using memory improvement techniques.
  4. implement an effective reading technique to improve comprehension of textbook material.
  5. take accurate and complete class notes.
  6. select and apply appropriate test-taking strategies.
  7. use creative and critical thinking techniques in problem solving and decision making.
  8. demonstrate effective listening skills.
  9. implement an effective strategy for communicating across cultures.
  10. use college resources effectively.
  11. evaluate his/her health and identify any behavior(s) that may need adjustment.
  12. analyze his/her values and set short-term and long-term goals related to them.
