The Fundamentals
of Writing team is proud to present the second volume of Project Discovery,
a student-authored text consisting of essays written by students enrolled
in Fundamentals of Writing (ENGL-097) during the 2005-2006 school term.
This second volume includes six essays based on discoveries students
have made about themselves, others, and society in general. The collection
coincides with the motto for Howard Community College and the First-Year
Experience program: “You Can Get There from Here.” Implicit
in the motto and theme is the idea of an inward journey that gradually
expands outward. Essays in this volume reiterate this concept, as they
demonstrate students’ ability to analyze both the personal and
the objective.
Essays selected for this volume were nominated by instructors who teach
Fundamentals of Writing (ENGL-097). The essays were final drafts that
earned either an A or B on assigned writing tasks. Both student and
instructor then worked to revise the essay for submission in this publication.
Finally, the essays were collected and read by committee members who
made final selections for this volume. The names of student-authors
not chosen for this volume are listed in the Acknowledgements section.
We celebrate the authors whose essays appear in this volume and hope
their work inspires as well as serves as models for student writing
and teaching.
