Source Summary/Evaluation

Grade: 10%

Due Date: end of class 4/21

Format:

ü      Two pages—developed paragraphs

ü      Typed

ü      MLA style

Purpose:

ü      Information Literacy

ü      Locating sources

ü      Summarizing sources

ü      Evaluating sources

Prompt:

Recently, you were asked to read 15 selections from the final chapters of our text, Making Literature Matter.  You were then asked to select the three works that mattered most to you, writing a paragraph describing each of them.

Now, choose one of these three works to research for our final paper—you will want to consider subject matter first because you will be asked to locate 4 sources in addition to our text. One source should focus on the work itself and/or the author. Three sources should focus on the subject matter or theme of the work chosen.

Today, we will take a look at information literacy on the web—visiting the HCC library online, as well as one or two search engines. After we are finished, do this:

ü      Find a web source (for your author or subject)  that you consider well presented and informative

ü      Check the site against the evaluation criteria you have been given

ü      Write a two page paper (with organized paragraphs) arguing why you think this site deserves a good evaluation

Although you will be asked to use an argument technique in the final research paper (charge/answer or a rebuttal paragraph), for this assignment, you are required only to have a thesis statement that shows argument (takes a stand) and sufficient specific detail that argues for or supports your thesis.
